Gaborone – Mascom Wireless has today unveiled MyZaka Flexi, a trailblazing new product that marks a national first in mobile device financing. The launch, held at Mascom Innovation Centre, Phakalane, brought together stakeholders from government, regulatory bodies, industry peers, and the media to witness the introduction of a solution that promises to accelerate digital inclusion across Botswana.
MyZaka Flexi enables eligible MyZaka customers to acquire a 4G-enabled smartphone today and pay for it over a 12-month period, with no collateral and no complex paperwork. Designed to meet the needs of everyday Batswana, the product bridges the gap between aspiration and accessibility, while advancing Mascom’s mission to be a digital services provider of choice to Batswana.
“This is more than a product launch—it is a national milestone,” said Chief Consumer Business Officer Mr Kolubah Flomo speaking at the event. “The digital divide cannot be solved through infrastructure alone. Access to smart devices must become a norm, not a privilege. With MyZaka Flexi, we are placing the tools of participation into the hands of those who need them most — in a way that respects their realities- ensuring affordability.
The product is a direct response to current market realities. According to the 2023 Botswana Communications Regulatory Authority (BOCRA) report, while mobile penetration stands at 176%, only 49% of active devices are smartphones — leaving many Batswana unable to benefit from digital services such as mobile banking, online education, and e-health.
MyZaka Flexi aims to change this.
This first-of-its-kind facility reflects Mascom’s strong alignment with national priorities such as the Digital Transformation Agenda, which identify equitable access to digital tools as a pillar of Botswana’s development.
With MyZaka Flexi, Mascom is not simply launching a new product—we are addressing a structural barrier that has long hindered economic and social participation for thousands of citizens.”
While the initial rollout targets a specific customer segment, Mascom revealed plans to scale the offering to include a broader catalogue of smartphones, catering to different market tiers.
“We have every intention to scale and evolve this facility. We are kicking off with a plan for over 40k devices across the country and with further intention to roll out to over 250k devices. Our aspiration is to build a full catalogue of smartphones catering to diverse needs of our customers at affordable terms for the ordinary Batswana” Kolubah added.
Mascom is also committed to investing in digital education, equipping customers not just with devices, but the knowledge to use them safely and productively—from cyber security to financial literacy.
